The Lighthouse at South Manitou Island is probably my favorite.
You reach it by taking the Mishemakwa from Leland. Beware:
if the lake is choppy, eat saltines, take Dramamine, bring your own barfie
bag, and stand in the front of the boat, focusing on the horizon as you
go. But it is well worth the trip once you arrive at this isolated
haven. (One other caution -- beware the killer chipmunks. They
love peanut butter sandwiches!!)
We usually camp near Cedar when we're going here. |
| Pointe Betsie is probably one of the most photographed of the Northern
Lake Michigan Lighthouses. It's a couple of miles north of Frankfort
down a little dirt road off M22. If you go past the golf course, you've
gone too far. (And check out what those golfers are wearing.) |

The Grand Traverse Light is beautifully maintained with a terrific
museum inside. It is situated at the very tip of the Leelanau Peninsula
(the little finger of Michigan), and requires a very scenic drive to get
there. Early lighthouse keepers didn't always have a lot to do, so
there are some great stone baskets and stands that were built to fill
the time. |
| The weather on Lake Michigan is susceptible to change. Here a storm is coming in at the Frankfort harbor lights. This harbor is just a little south of Point Betsie. |

 | Aah, the light at Silver Lake. Actually, it's Little Sable Point Light, but we always think of it as the Silver Lake Lighthouse. You follow the little road around the south end of Silver Lake, past where the commercial dune rides go, and run into Lake Michigan. Before you get wet, turn left. There is now a nice parking lot at the lighthouse. |
